Tewkesbury Abbey

Tewkesbury Abbey was founded in the 11th century by Robert Fitzhamon for the order of Benedictine monks and is the second largest parish church in England, larger than many cathedrals. It is believed that there was an even older Saxon abbey on the site since 715.

The Refectory serves a wide range of refreshments including freshly prepared food, home-made cakes and biscuits. It is open all year, normally from 9:30am.

The Abbey Shop sells jewellery, souvenirs, prayer cards, Celtic crosses, holding crosses, books, cards, candles, china, glass and even Tewkesbury Abbey Bears.

The abbey supports a wide variety of musical activities throughout the year. The recently restored Milton Organ within the abbey is possibly the oldest in the country dating back to the early 17th century. It was reputedly once played by John Milton and is still in daily use.

The gardens that surround the abbey are a delight to walk through or to sit in.
