Tewkesbury is certainly not short of a few pubs and caters well for all sorts ranging from those wanting a lively night out through to those who enjoy fine ale in a warm, traditional ambience. |

'At the Hop Pole at Tewkesbury they stopped to dine; upon which occasion there was more ale, with some port besides', wrote Charles Dickens about one of the oldest inns in Gloucestershire. Today, you can still stop to dine and drink ale with port besides by walking to the Royal Hop Pole Hotel along Church Street or by approach from the River Avon (shown right). |

The oldest of all the pubs in Gloucestershire is Ye Olde Black Bear found at the very northern end of High Street. This traditional inn is open all day, every day, has a garden that runs to the River Avon and always has a selection of guest ales.

The King John's Tavern, with its regular scenes of violence, vomiting, public urination and other forms of public disorder is one of the lesser-welcomed public houses in Tewkesbury. A police raid during the summer of 2006 resulted in the discovery of a number of knives and a quantity of white powder believed to be a class A drug.
